Re-districting: How is Our District and Your Family Affected?
During February 2004 Georgia’s political landscape changed when a Federal Judicial Panel ruled Georgia’s current State House and State Senate District unconstitutional.
The ruling set into motion a redistricting process like Georgia had never seen in its history. The process was different because the Republican Party controlled the Senate, the Democratic Party controlled the House and the Governor, a Republican, Sonny Perdue vowed not to sign a map with multi-member districts.
In the end, the Senate passed a fair map, while the House did not. In fact the House did not even bring a map to the Floor a vote. That action, or lack thereof, placed the Georgia Legislature back in the hands of the Federal Courts, which in March 2004 finalized the map used for the 2004 elections.
What did that mean to House District 37?
Some precincts were moved but the district’s makeup remained intact: Alpharetta, Roswell and unincorporated North Fulton.
Fortunately, the largest change in our district is the district number, with House District 37 having become House District 47. See the map below or go to www.sos.state.ga.us to determine your district and locate your polling place.
